Prophets make grave mistakes in the Bible

 

When I went back and read the Bible for myself, I found that many of the stories were very different from what I had always heard. One thing that stood out to me was the way some of the prophets are portrayed. They are not simply shown making ordinary human mistakes; in several cases, they are described as committing very serious sins.

This raised an important question in my mind. If God chose these individuals to guide humanity and convey His message, shouldn't they be the best examples of righteousness? Shouldn't they be the people we look up to and strive to imitate? A prophet is not just an ordinary person; he is someone whom God has chosen to lead others toward truth and moral excellence.

 

Yet when I read the biblical narratives, I found accounts that were difficult for me to reconcile with that understanding.

 

Take David, for example. According to the Bible, he committed adultery with Bathsheba. Then, in an attempt to conceal what had happened, he arranged for her husband, Uriah, to be placed on the front lines of battle, where he was killed. After Uriah's death, David married Bathsheba.

 

When I read this account, I couldn't help but ask myself: How can someone whom God chose as a prophet and leader be portrayed as committing adultery and arranging the death of an innocent man? These are not minor mistakes or lapses in judgment. They are among the gravest moral sins. In fact, many ordinary people live their entire lives without committing either of these acts.

 

This is not meant to deny that prophets are human or that human beings can make mistakes. Rather, it raises a deeper question: What kind of moral example should God's chosen messengers set? If they are meant to guide people toward righteousness, why are they depicted as committing sins that most people would consider extraordinarily serious?

 

David is only one example. As I continued reading, I found other stories that raised similar questions. Together, they made me wonder whether these portrayals are consistent with what I believe the role of a prophet should be—a person chosen by God to exemplify faith, integrity, and moral excellence.
